1. Checking and Reconditioning the Piston
a. P i s t o n S h a p e s
T h e p i s t o n h a s a slight t a p e r b e l o w t h e r i n g
s e c t i o n w h e n it is c o l d , as s h o w n i n F i g . 4-6-1
( A ) . W h e n it w a r m s u p , t h e e x p a n s i o n o f t h e
r i n g s e c t i o n is greater t h a n t h a t o f t h e s k i r t
because t h e r i n g s e c t i o n is e x p o s e d t o h i g h e r
t e m p e r a t u r e s . T h i s d e c r e a s e s t h e n o r m a l clear-
ance b e t w e e n t h e p i s t o n a n d c y l i n d e r w a l l , as
s h o w n i n F i g . 4-6-1 (B).
W h e n t h e p i s t o n is v i e w e d f r o m t h e b o t t o m , its
d i a m e t e r at A (at t h e p i s t o n p i n bosses) is s l i g h t l y
s m a l l e r t h a n at B ( r i g h t a n g l e s t o t h e p i s t o n p i n ) .
A t o p e r a t i n g t e m p e r a t u r e s , t h e p i s t o n a s s u m e s a
r o u n d s h a p e , b e c a u s e t h e e x p a n s i o n a t A ( t h e
p i s t o n p i n bosses) is greater t h a n at B .

1. Verification et remise en etat du piston
a. Formes de piston
Lorsque le piston est froid, sa partie superieure
est legerement conique, comme le montre la
Fig. 4-6-1 ( A ) . Par contre, lorsqu'il s'echauffe, la
partie superieure se dilate davantage que l a j u p e .
car eile est exposee ä des temperatures plus
elevees. De ce fait, l'ecart normal entre le piston
et la paroid du cylindre diminue en cet endroit,
comme le montre la Fig. 4-6-1 ( B ) .
Lorsque l'on regarde le piston par en dessous, son
diametre en A (bossages d'axe de piston)
devient plus grand qu'en B . (ä angle droit avec
l'axe). A u x temperatures de regime, le piston
reprend sa rondeur car la dilatation est plus
grande en A qu'en B .
b. Mesure du vent du piston
Le vent du piston est constitue par la difference
entre l'alesage minimal du cylindre et le diametre
maximal du piston. U n ecart satisfaisant s'etablit
entre 0,040 et 0,045 m m , comme expose au
chapitre " C y l i n d r e " .
Pour determiner le diametre m a x i m a l du piston,
on utilise un micrometre place ä angle droit par
rapport au trou de piston, ä 10 m m du bord
inferieur comme le montre la Fig. 4-6-3.
