6. Scavenging by the 7th Port
O n t h e 5 - p o r t c y l i n d e r , t h e a u x i l i a r y t r a n s f e r p o r t s
are p o s i t i o n e d o n t h e s a m e level as t h e m a i n t r a n s f e r
p o r t s . A s t h e p i s t o n l o w e r s t o t h e p o s i t i o n as
i l l u s t r a t e d , t h e f u e l - a i r m i x t u r e i n t h e c r a n k c a s e is
c o m p r e s s e d a n d is g o i n g t o s t r e a m i n t o t h e c y l i n d e r
t h r o u g h t h e m a i n a n d a u x i l i a r y t r a n s f e r p o r t s . O n t h e
7 - p o r t c y l i n d e r , t o o , t h e c o m p r e s s e d m i x t u r e is a b o u t
t o s t r e a m i n t o t h e c y l i n d e r t h r o u g h t h e i n l e t p o r t o f
t h e p i s t o n .
A s t h e p i s t o n m o v e s d o w n f u r t h e r , t h e m a i n , a u x i l i a -
ry a n d 7 t h p o r t s are c l e a r e d a n d t h e f u e l - a i r m i x t u r e
e n t e r s t h e c y l i n d e r in s t r e a m s . In t h i s case, t h e
i n e r t i a e f f e c t o f t h e s t r e a m s causes t h e reed valve t o
o p e n , a n d t h e f u e l - a i r m i x t u r e passing t h r o u g h t h e
reed valve f l o w s d i r e c t l y i n t o t h e c y l i n d e r t h r o u g h t h e
7 t h p o r t ( t h e m i x t u r e d o e s n o t e n t e r t h e c r a n k c a s e ) ,
t h e r e b y f o r c i n g t h e b u r n e d gases o u t o f t h e c y l i n d e r .

lumiere
Dans un cylindre ä 5 lumieres, les lumieres de
transfert auxiliaires sont situees au meme niveau que
les lumieres de transfert principales. Lorsque le
piston, lors de sa descente, atteint la position illustree
ci-dessous, les gaz carbures comprimes dans le Carter
vont faire irruption dans le cylindre par les lumieres
de transfert principales et auxiliares. L a meme chose
se passe dans un cylindre ä 7 lumieres, avec cette
difference que le piston decouvre egalement la 7
e
lumiere. A ce moment precis, l'effect d'inertie
produit par les courants gazeux provoque Fouverture
de la soupape flexible, et les gaz carbures passant par
cette soupape penetrent directement dans le cylindre
(sans passer par le Carter) o ü ils contribuent ä
expulser les gaz d'echappement residuels: c'est le
balayage par la 7

lumiere.
