The netmask defines how the IP address is to be
interpreted or which parts of the IP address are used to
identify the network and which are used to identify the
device.
Example: With the netmask 255.255.255.0 the first 3 bytes
(MSB...) are used for addressing the network and only the
last byte (LSB) for addressing the device. 254 subscribers
can thus be addressed (e.g. via the IP addresses
10.0.0.1...10.0.0.254) without using a router.
The netmask is transferred via a byte array of length
4 bytes in HEX or decimal format.

DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) can be used
to specify whether the processor unit should use static,
manually defined network parameters (IP address,
netmask, gateway,...) for network communication, or
whether these parameters should be obtained
automatically from the network.
DHCP can only be used in a network that
allows the dynamic assignment of IP addresses.
This must be ensured before activating DHCP,
otherwise it may no longer be possible to
access the processor unit via the network. In an
emergency, this setting can be reversed via the
service port (USB). An M12-USB service cable
is required for this (see chapter 10.3 on
page 173).
