Bits and Bytes

In this chapter you'll discover a little more about digital technology, binary numbers, bits and
bytes. If you're already familiar with this terminology, then you do not need to read this
chapter, as maybe you are already one of the „old hands" of digital. But maybe it would do
you good to read through this chapter anyway, to brush up on your knowledge. If you are
not familiar with the terms bit, byte or binary numbers, then we would recommend that it is
most important for you to read this chapter.
In normal, everyday speech, when we speak about numbers, we are normally referring to
decimal numbers. These consist of the figures 0 to 9, which to a so called decimal point,
represent a number (ones-, tens-, hundreds- and so on). Each decimal point has its own
value, namely 1, 10, 100 and so on.
But in digital technology, there are only two figures, 0 and 1. The numbers, which are made
up from a combination of zeros and ones, are known as „binary numbers". A combination of
eight zeros or eight ones is called a „byte". Each individual position in this byte is called a
„bit". The bits are counted from 0 (bit 0) to 7 (bit 7). Each bit position within the combina-
tion has specific values allocated to it, the bit with largest value is on the left, and that with
the lowest (bit 0) is to the right, just as in the decimal system.
