8.4.7 Speed Calibration

If the navigation receiver in one operation style is operated as a double-sensor, it has the
possibility to report the „true" speed of a vehicle running by in [km/h] and transmit it over the
LocoNet, because there are some digital systems, which will work on the speed reports. You
can find out more however, from the manual of your own digital system.
In order to report the „true" speed (the speed of a corresponding prototype vehicle), a scale
factor must be entered in LNCV14, which is made up from the distance between the sensors
and a multiplication factor based on the scale of the model:
Scale factor LNCV14 = Distance between sensors [mm] * Scale multiplicator
The scale multiplicator can be taken from the following table:
Gauge
Scale Multiplicator
H0
TT
N
Example: With a distance between sensors of 15 mm, the scale factor for H0 gauge is:
LNCV14 = 15 * 1566 = 23490

The speed of the vehicle to be measured should not be too low, otherwise it cannot be mea-
sured. The lowest measurable speed is dependent on the distance between sensors and the
scale. It can be expressed by the following equation:
Speed v [km/h] = distance between sensors [mm] * K
Gauge
Constant K
H0
0,12528
TT
0,1728
N
0,2304
Example: H0 Gauge, 7 mm distance between sensors, corresponding to the „PROFI"
stencil
v [km/h] = distance between sensors [mm] * K = 7 * 0,12528 km/h = 0,9 km/h on the prototype
This corresponds to a speed of 2.9 mm/s of the model vehicle on your layout. In N gauge,
with a distance of 7mm between sensors according to the stencil this will give the lowest
measurable speed of 1,6 km/h on the prototype, corresponding to just 5.1 mm/s for your
model train.
The values as stated are correct if all the sensors have been correctly installed in the track,
with regard to the height in the track bed, the central positioning, and the axle length are all
exactly identical. There can be small variations in the stated values if the installation has not
been correctly done.
