APPENDIX B: PERFORMING A RESERVOIR
RINSE
To prevent drug overdose when decreasing concentrations or changing solutions,
you must perform a reservoir rinse twice to remove the drug which remains in
the reservoir after emptying the pump. This remaining volume is known as the
residual volume. The maximum residual volume of pump models with a 10 ml
reservoir is 1.2 ml. The maximum residual volume of pump models with an 18 ml
reservoir is 2.4 ml.
CAUTION:
Failure to perform a reservoir rinse when lowering drug
concentrations will result in a greater than intended drug
concentration, leading to an increased risk of drug overdose.
The procedure for performing a reservoir rinse is outlined below. Use a 22-gauge
non-coring Huber needle to perform the rinse.
1.
Empty the pump completely.
2.
Fill pump with 6 ml (for 10 ml pump models) or 10 ml (for 18 ml pump
models) of sterile preservative-free Sodium Chloride Injection, USP.
3.
Empty the pump completely.
4.
Repeat Steps 2 and 3 and then fill pump with prescribed solution according
to the recommended refill procedure.
