Clearing a Catheter Occlusion (Vascular Applications
Only)
1.
Assemble a 20 ml syringe, stopcock and 25-gauge needle. Fill syringe with
5 ml of heparinized solution (if not contraindicated).
2.
Enter the side catheter access port as described in "Injecting into the Side
Catheter Access Port" in this manual.
3.
Gently alternate irrigation and aspiration to open the catheter.
4.
If resistance continues, aspirate as much fluid as possible from the side
catheter access port. Use a 1 ml tuberculin syringe, stopcock, and 25-gauge
needle and inject 0.5 ml of heparinized solution (1000 U/ml) to lightly
pressurize the system. Close the stopcock and remove the needle.
Injection of more than 0.5 ml of fluid into the side catheter
CAUTION:
access port under high pressure may cause catheter
disconnection or catheter damage and subsequent fluid
leakage.
5.
Check for catheter patency in 10 minutes using a 20 ml syringe filled with
5 ml of heparinized solution (1000 U/ml). Lightly pressurize the syringe and
wait 10-15 seconds to observe for loss of resistance. Do not force infusion.
6.
If the catheter remains occluded, aspirate through the side catheter access
port to remove original 0.5 ml of heparinized solution.
7.
Repeat step 4 using 0.5 ml of heparinized solution, urokinase, or
streptokinase (refer to drug labeling for complete instructions) and wait 10 to
30 minutes before checking for catheter patency. Attempt to aspirate the clot
before flushing.
