NOTE: If desired and not contraindicated, program a Postoperative
Priming Bolus to advance the drug from the reservoir to the
catheter tip. Refer to Appendix A for instructions.
When replacing a pump but not the catheter: Before
programming a postoperative priming bolus, remove drug
from the catheter. Withdraw 1 to 2 ml of fluid from the
catheter to avoid delivery of drug to the infusion site during
the postoperative priming bolus.
Do not aspirate the catheter during vascular applications. If the
presence of blood is suspected in the side catheter access port or
catheter, flush the system with a minimum of 10 ml saline (a
heparinized solution may be used if not contraindicated).

Refilling the Implanted Pump

NOTE: Refer to the instructions in a Medtronic
complete refill procedure.
Injection of drug during the refill procedure must only be done
through the center reservoir fill port. Improper injection through
the side catheter access port or into the pump pocket may result
in a clinically significant or fatal drug overdose. Refer to
"Appendix C: Emergency Procedures" of this manual or the
appropriate drug labeling for specific drug overdose symptoms
and methods of management. To prevent overdose when
refilling the pump:
• always identify location of the center reservoir fill port and
side catheter access port (if present),
• use the template, instructions, and other accessories
provided with the Medtronic Refill Kit,
• use a 3.81 cm (minimum), 22-gauge Huber-type needle,
and
• use other medical procedures as appropriate (e.g.,
fluoroscopy, glucose check of the aspirate) to verify
location of pump reservoir septum when refilling the
pump.
• Refer to the appropriate drug labeling for indications,
contraindications, warnings, precautions, adverse events,
dosage and administration information and screening
procedures.
It is imperative to follow aseptic technique throughout the procedure to maintain
sterility of the pump reservoir, fluid pathway, and device pocket.
