13. Attach a 0.22 micron filter to syringe containing the prescribed fluid.
a. Purge all air from filter and attach syringe/filter to extension tubing.
b. Open the clamp and barbotage or inject directly, as appropriate, at an
infusion rate not greater than 15 ml per minute.
c. Check the needle puncture site for swelling during injection.
CAUTION: Do not force infusion. Do not rock the needle sideways.
NOTE: Some normal resistance to injection will be encountered when
using small diameter catheters and needles. If unusual
resistance to injection occurs, rotating the needle bevel by 90°
may be helpful.
14. Close the clamp, remove the spent prescribed fluid syringe, and replace it
with a syringe containing preservative-free saline if flushing is desired.
NOTE: Use a heparinized solution (if not contraindicated) for the final
flush in vascular applications.
a. Open the clamp and inject at an infusion rate not greater than 15 ml per
minute.
b. Check the needle puncture site for swelling during injection.
NOTE: Flushing the catheter access port also flushes the drug from
the catheter. Drug therapy from the pump will be lost until the
catheter is refilled by the drug flow from the pump.
15. Upon completion of the flush, close the clamp and remove the needle from
the side catheter access port septum.
16. Using a sterile gauze pad, immediately apply pressure to the puncture site
for one minute.
