Calculating the Catheter Volume
The precise catheter model number, implanted catheter length and pump
model number are of critical importance when calculating and programming a
bridge bolus. Calculating and programming a bridge bolus without precise
information may result in a clinically significant or fatal drug under- or
overdose. A universal value does not exist which can be used as a substitute
for this knowledge.
1. Identify catheter model.
2. Identify volume per inch in catheter. Refer to the appropriate catheter
technical manual for the volume/cm (inch).
3. Determine implanted length of catheter. Refer to the patient's records (many
catheters are trimmed at implant) or appropriate catheter technical manual
for catheter length.
CAUTION: If catheter is trimmed at implant, the implanted length must
be used in the Catheter Volume formula.
4. Determine the catheter volume using the formula below. Refer to the
appropriate catheter technical manual for specifications. See example that
follows.
