4. Disinfect the injection site with an antiseptic solution
(e.g., povidone-iodine).
5. Put on sterile gloves.
6. Place fenestrated drape, exposing pump site.
7. Attach a 25-gauge needle and extension tube with clamp to the empty
syringe.
8. Palpate the injection site, feeling for the raised portion of the side catheter
access port to locate the septum.
9. Place the template over the pump, aligning edges of template with
edges of pump and side catheter access port.
CAUTION: Be certain that the side catheter access port septum has been
located and NOT the center reservoir fill port septum.
Fluoroscopy and a glucose check of the aspirate (if not
contraindicated) can be used to aid location of the side
catheter access port during needle insertion.
10. Gently insert the needle through the skin and side catheter access port
septum until it touches the needle stop (Figure 8).

11. Open clamp and aspirate approximately 1-2 ml to ensure removal of drug
from the side catheter access port and catheter. Refer to Specifications in the
appropriate catheter technical manual for the volume.
Do not aspirate the catheter during vascular applications. If the
presence of blood is suspected in the side catheter access port or
catheter, flush the system with a minimum of 10 ml saline (a
heparinized solution may be used if not contraindicated).
12. Close the clamp, remove the syringe, and discard syringe with aspirate.
