APPENDIX A: CALCULATIONS

Calculating a Postoperative Priming Bolus

The Postoperative Priming Bolus is calculated and programmed after the pump
has been purged, emptied, filled and implanted. To initiate therapy after implant,
the clinician calculates the volume of fluid in the pump tubing and catheter to
determine the bolus amount required to move the drug from the reservoir to the
tip of the catheter.
CAUTION:
Four values are needed to calculate the Postoperative Priming Bolus amount and
duration: the pump tubing volume, catheter volume, their sum, and the drug
concentration.
Determining the Pump Tubing Volume
The volume in the pump tubing from the reservoir to the tip of the catheter port
varies for different pump models.
The most conservative volume estimates to prevent an overdose during the
Postoperative Priming Bolus are provided in Table 7. Use the pump tubing value
that corresponds to the appropriate pump model.
