Pump Prescription

The infusion mode, drug dose, and dispense rate define the pump prescription.
The pump can dispense a drug in a variety of ways. The appropriate dosage
regimen must be determined by the individual physician following examination
of the pertinent medical literature and the drug package insert.
The four basic infusion modes are defined and illustrated in Table 3.

CAUTION: Except under conditions of close supervision, Single Bolus and
Periodic Bolus (Bolus and Bolus Delay) programmable modes
are not recommended for vascular applications due to: the
intermittent periods of minimal flow of 1.8 µl/hour for the
interval between boluses of a Periodic Bolus Mode or the
period of no flow following a Single Bolus dose; and the
possible increased risk of catheter occlusion in the vascular
environment. Continuous and Complex Continuous
programmable modes are recommended for vascular therapy.
CAUTION: Physicians must understand the concentration, dose and rate
relationships before prescribing pump infusion modes. Failure
to understand the relationship between drug concentration,
dose and pump rate can lead to under- or overdose.
