INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
Review these instructions before beginning preparations for implanting the
SynchroMed ® EL Infusion System. The catheter is usually placed into the delivery
site first. Some surgeons, however, prefer to prepare the pump pocket first, to
allow for concomitant programming, warming, and emptying/filling of the
pump.
Preparing the pump for implantation takes about 30 to 60 minutes and must be
coordinated by a fully trained individual. The circulating nurse may perform the
non-sterile programming of the pump before it is removed from its sterile
package. The scrub nurse or physician should warm, assemble, empty, fill, and
manipulate the pump during all sterile procedures.

Equipment and Supplies

Assemble the following equipment:
Sterile items
• Medtronic SynchroMed
®
– Implantable drug pump
– 22-gauge, 3.8 cm (1.5 inch), Huber-type needle (for filling the pump)
– 25-gauge, 3.8 cm (1.5 inch) needle (for flushing the side catheter access
port, if applicable)
– Mesh pouch (if applicable)
• Catheter(s) and surgical accessories
• Locally supplied items
– 20 ml syringe
– A basin of sterile saline or water maintained at 35 °C - 40 °C
(95 °F - 104 °F)
– A MAXIMUM of 6 ml (for 10 ml pump models) or 10 ml (for
18 ml pump models) of the prescribed drug
Non-sterile items
• Medtronic programmer

Preparing for Implantation

Clean Procedures
1. Set up the programmer according to instructions provided in the
programmer's technical manual, located inside the programmer lid.
2. Examine the pump package. The implantable pump is packed in a durable
container. If the package is damaged, do not implant the pump. Contact your
local Medtronic representative.
