Emptying and Filling the Pump at Implant

Extreme pressure following activation of the reservoir valve may
result in procedural delays or pump damage.
To prevent activation of the reservoir valve:
• Always warm the pump and keep it warm (35 °C - 40 °C;
95 °F - 104 °F) while it is being emptied and filled.
• Empty and fill the pump while it is submerged in the
warm water bath.
• Completely aspirate all contents of reservoir before
filling.
• Do not allow air into the pump's reservoir via an
open needle.
• Do not exceed the specified volume of 6 ml or 10 ml at
implant.
• Do not force fluid into the pump reservoir.

Emptying the Pump

Do not allow the pump to cool below 35 °C (95 °F) when
CAUTION:
emptying the pump. To maintain temperature and proper
reservoir pressure of pump, empty the drug reservoir while
the pump is submerged in the sterile warm water bath.
1.
Assemble 22-gauge Huber-type needle and 20 ml syringe.
2.
Insert the needle into reservoir septum and withdraw the sterile water from
the drug reservoir until air bubbles are observed in the syringe (Figure 3).
The expected volume of sterile water is between 5 to 9 ml for 10 ml pump
models or 13 to 17 ml for 18 ml pump models.
CAUTION:
Observation of air bubbles is essential when removing water
from the reservoir. Failure to withdraw all sterile water from
the pump's reservoir and then attempting to fill can activate
the reservoir valve.
