50 Appendix A: Calculations
1. Determine amount of the bolus.

2. Determine the duration of Bolus.

3. If the bolus is less than 99 hours, go to Step 4. If the bolus is greater than 99
hours, go to Step 5.
4. Program a bolus < 99 hours. When the bolus duration is less than 99 hours,
program a Bolus Mode with a Simple Continuous Mode.
NOTE: Refer to the Software and Programmer Technical Manual for
detailed programming instructions. Basic programming steps
include:
a. Enter new drug concentration and prescription via the Changes Screen.
b. Program the bolus
Simple Continuous Mode
c. Verify prescription and bolus dose.
d. Update pump via telemetry.
e. Verify the new prescription on Pump Status after Update Screen.
5. For a bolus > 99 hours: boluses greater than 99 hours are not programmed -
the SynchroMed ® EL Infusion System is cleared of the old drug concentration
over time. Program the pump to deliver the old drug concentration at the
desired rate using the following procedure:
NOTE: Refer to the Software and Programmer Technical Manual for
detailed programming instructions. Basic programming steps
include:
a. Program the reservoir volume via the Changes Screen. Leave the old drug
concentration entered (Do not program a new drug concentration).
b. Verify the old drug concentration, reservoir volume, and desired drug
rate.
c. Update pump via telemetry.
d. Verify that the old drug concentration, desired drug rate, and reservoir
volume are programmed on the Pump Status After Update Screen.
e. Perform reservoir rinse twice. See Appendix B: Performing a Reservoir
Rinse, page 53.

Depending upon the calibration constant, some pumps may not accept a 0.52 ml or larger bolus dose. In
the rare case that this should happen, two boluses may need to be programmed in succession. Call
Medtronic for technical assistance.

If you are using a Complex Continuous Mode, remember - you cannot program a bolus. Therefore, when
you want to change the pump drug concentration with this bridging program, you must convert to the
Simple Continuous Mode for one refill cycle and follow the above directions.
