16.4 Changing the motor pinion / adjusting the backlash
The model is equipped with a 12T motor pinion. You can replace it with the 14T motor pinion (included). The motor
pinion has the following effects:
12T motor pinion: better acceleration, lower top speed
14T motor pinion: poorer acceleration, higher top speed
Make sure you readjust the backlash after replacing the motor pinion. Even if you do not want to change the motor
pinion installed upon delivery, it is still advisable to check (and adjust) the backlash from time to time, as the fastening
screws can become loose over time due to vibrations after prolonged operation of the vehicle.
Proceed as follows:
Pull out the clip (A) and remove the two rubber rings
(B). You can then remove the protective cover (C).
The set screw (G) secures the motor pinion (F) to the
motor shaft. Basically, the distance between the motor
pinion (F) and the main gear (H) must be as small as
possible without the gears running strictly.
Loosen the two hexagon socket screws (D) and then
move the motor carriage (E) with the brushless elec-
tric motor attached to it.
To change the motor pinion:
– Loosen the set screw (G) using a suitable hex key
(2 mm). Pull the motor pinion off the motor shaft.
– Screw the set screw (J) a little bit into the corre-
sponding thread of the motor pinion (I).
– Put the motor pinion onto the motor shaft in the
correct orientation and tighten the set screw.
Ensure that the set screw rests exactly on the
flattened side of the motor shaft.
Gently push the motor with the motor pinion towards
the main gear. The engine pinion and the main gear
will now be engaged without backlash. However, this
shortens the service life of the gears!
Place a thin paper strip (K) between the main gear and
the motor pinion. Turn the main gear by hand so that
the paper strip is pulled in between the gears.
The pressure of the paper pushes the electric engine
by the required amount. Tighten the two hexagon
socket screws (D) in this position.
