2. Avascular necrosis of the femoral head.
3. Non-union of femoral neck fractures.
4. Certain high subcapital and femoral neck fractures in the elderly.
5. Degenerative arthritis involving only the femoral head in which the acetabulum does not require
replacement.
6. Pathology involving only the femoral head/neck and/or proximal femur that can be adequately
treated by hip hemiarthroplasty.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

The following conditions are contraindications for total or partial hip replacement (hemiarthroplasty):
1. Active local or systemic infection.
2. Loss of musculature, neuromuscular compromise or vascular deficiency in the affected limb
rendering the procedure unjustified.
3. Poor bone quality, such as osteoporosis, where, in the surgeon's opinion, there could be
considerable migration of the prosthesis or a significant chance of fracture of the femoral shaft and/
or the lack of adequate bone to support the implant(s).
4. Charcot's or Paget's disease.
5. For hip hemiarthroplasty, any pathological condition of the acetabulum, such as distorted acetabuli
with irregularities (e.g. from congenital hip dysplasia), protrusio acetabuli (arthrokatadysis), or
migrating acetabuli, that would preclude the use of the natural acetabulum as an appropriate
articular surface for the partial hip prosthesis.
NOTE: Diabetes, at present, has not been established as a contraindication. However, because of the
increased risk for complications such as infection, slow wound healing, etc., the physician should
carefully consider the advisability of hip replacement in the severely diabetic patient.

WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS

• HA Coated Implants: HA Coated implants must not be implanted with cement.
• When changing the head on a femoral stem which is still in place, it is essential to use a metal-metal
interface.
• Implants and trial components from different manufacturers or implant systems should never be
used together.
• Use only DePuy modular femoral heads with DePuy femoral stems. The taper of the femoral
head MUST match the taper of the femoral stem. All stems of the Corail Hip System have a 12/14
Articul'eze Mini Taper and are compatible with all DePuy heads with 12/14 - 5°43' tapers. Please
refer to the Surgical Technique Guide for a listing of compatible components. Use only DePuy
acetabular components with DePuy heads.
• In the case of Partial Hip Replacement (Hemiarthroplasty), only the following femoral components
must be used in association with the Corail stems: Self-Centering Bipolar, Hasting Bipolar and
Modular Cathcart Unipolar.
Please refer to the Surgical Technique Guide for a listing of compatible femoral components.
CAUTION: The Hastings Bipolar heads are not cleared for use in the U.S.A.
• The inner diameter of the acetabular component bearing surface must correspond to the femoral
head size. Use of a liner with a non-matching hip head size (e.g. 28mm inner diameter liner with a
22mm head) will result in higher stresses, accelerated wear and early failure.
• Use only DePuy acetabular shells with DePuy acetabular liners. Acetabular shell and acetabular
liner sizes MUST match.
• Hip prosthesis components should never be re-implanted. Even though the implant may appear
undamaged. NOTE: the implant may have developed microscopic imperfections which could lead
to failure.
• Always use trial prosthesis for trial purposes. Trials must have the same configuration and size as
the corresponding components.
