SYSTEM B HANDPIECE
INSTALLING BUCHANAN HEAT PLUGGERS/HOT PULP TEST TIP
Install the desired Heat Plugger/
Hot Pulp Test Tip in the System B
Handpiece as shown in the image.
The Heat Plugger simply slides
into one of 6 positions available
by indexing the hex nut on the
tip. Heat Pluggers without this
hex nut should not be used with
the elements obturation unit.
SELECTING SYSTEM B MODE
Press the desired mode button (for Downpack, Backfill, Hot Pulp Test, or Cautery).
The temperature, temperature range, and maximum duration for each of these procedures is listed
in the chart below. Heat Pluggers should be used for Downpack, Backfill, and Cautery Modes. Hot
Pulp Test Tip should be used for Hot Pulp Test Mode.

After selecting the mode, the unit will display the mode selected and its preset temperature.
CHANGING TEMPERATURE
NOTE: Temperature can only be changed in Downpack and Hot Pulp Test Mode
If a temperature setting other than the preset is desired, the
change the temperature of the heat plugger tip in 5 degree increments. Holding either
(-) button for two seconds will scroll the temperature until the desired temperature is obtained as
indicated on the display. Pressing and holding the current mode buttons for 4 seconds will save that
temperature as a preset for that specific mode. This new temperature preset is retained until manually
changed or defaults are renewed. If a button for another mode is selected before saving the new
temperature, the unit will switch to that mode and the new temperature will not be saved.
ACTIVATING SYSTEM B HANDPIECE
Activate the System B Handpiece extra orally prior to use by depressing and holding its button. If
the Heat plugger is installed correctly, the LED indicator on the Handpiece will illuminate, and the
appropriate mode indicator will flash rapidly. The Heat Plugger will only remain heated as long
as the button is depressed. To avoid overheating, each of the modes has a preset duration, as
shown in the table above. The Handpiece will need to be reactivated to resume heating beyond
the preset duration. The automatic sensing circuit will display
(relative to the selected mode) and will not function until correct tip is installed. If a worn-out tip
is encountered,
will also be displayed.
NOTE: Heat pluggers must be autoclaved between every use. See the instructions in the "Cleaning
and Sterilization" section.

EXTRUDER HANDPIECE
EXTRUDER HANDPIECE - INSERTING AND REMOVING CARTRIDGE
• Prior to inserting the cartridge press the
button
to calibrate the handpiece.
• Insert a new obturation cartridge into
the handpiece by pushing the larger
end of the cartridge into the handpiece
and turning it a quarter turn clockwise
so that it engages into the handpiece.
Remove the cartridge by turning the
locknut counterclockwise in order to
dislodge it. Then pull the cartridge out of
the handpiece. The cartridge can then be
disposed.
• To replace a cartridge before it is
completely empty, press the
button,
which will retract the plunger. During
plunger retraction, both indicators
will flash on the screen and the
indicator will remain solid after complete
plunger retraction.
NOTE: When the extruder handpiece is
disconnected from the console, the temperature Indicator will display this .
WARNING: Handle empty extruder cartridge by plastic locknut only. Other portions could
be hot and result in a serious burn.
ACTIVATING EXTRUDER HEATING
Press the
button or the activation button on
the extruder handpiece. Segments of

EXTRUDING GUTTA PERCHA
Activate the extruder by depressing any of the two buttons on the handpiece. The extruder motor
will initiate, which is indicated by a lighted LED on the handpiece and a flashing of
placing the extruder needle in the root canal, activate the extruder with the button on the
handpiece until material extrudes through the needle. Upon release of the button, gutta percha
will stop extruding.The extruder can then be placed into the root canal for obturation.
If the handpiece is deactivated before the cartridge
is empty, the plunger will retract slightly to prevent
excess material from discharging from the needle.
