IAM (INTELLIGENT ALTERNATOR)

GENERAL INFORMATION

The IAM (Intelligent Alternator Module) is controlled so as to recharge the battery in accordance with
the driving conditions and the state of the vehicle: the introduction of this component permits a 2–3%
reduction in emissions of CO
adjusted to a high value, in order to exploit the surplus kinetic energy to charge the battery to
maximum voltage;
When a high torque is requested, the reference voltage of the alternator is adjusted to a low
value, in order to decrease the torque absorbed by the alternator itself;
Outside of the acceleration and deceleration stages (in approximately normal rpm conditions),
the voltage reference value is adjusted in order to reach an optimal state of charge (SOC)
which ensures high efficiency, both during the charge and the discharge stages;
The (maximum and minimum) voltage limits are calculated according to the state of the battery
and the load.

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

The new voltage regulators introduced on the alternators already in use communicate with the engine
management control unit (NCM) by means of a LIN interface. The modules involved are:
The NCM, LIN master control unit, sends the commands to the regulator;
The regulator on the IAM, which sends feedback messages on its status via LIN to the NCM;
The NBC, which sends the signals, from the IBS, to the NCM via the C-CAN;
The IBS (for vehicles equipped with Start&Stop), which sends information about the battery to
the NBC via LIN.
The NCM will send the regulator operation commands (regulation voltage set-point, maximum current
energisation limits, etc.) to the regulator according to the status of: vehicle, engine, battery, alternator
and electrical load. Through the LIN, the regulator will transmit information on its status, which will be
used by the NCM to implement the appropriate strategies.
