CAUTION:
If stubborn deposits cannot be removed by cleaning, the laparoscope and/or light
guide cable should be returned to the manufacturer for repair.
Laparoscopes with damaged glass surfaces (for example, chips), impaired image
quality, or any deformations (for example, unintended rough surfaces, sharp edges
or protrusions) may no longer be used and should be discarded or returned to the
manufacturer for repair.
After cleaning, visually inspect all instruments for corrosion, damaged surfaces,
chips, or contamination. Soil may accumulate on the glass surfaces of mechanics
and optics. Instruments found to be contaminated must be cleaned again following
the procedures described in Steps 1 and 2.
To inspect laparoscopes and light guide cables:
86
Inspect all surfaces of the laparoscope to ensure it has no
sharp edges
dents
bends
cracks
signs of mechanical or thermal damage
Inspect the light guide cable.
a. Point one end of the light guide cable toward a light source such as a
window or lamp.
b.
Visually check the other end of the cable for dark spots. Dark spots indicate
broken optical fibers.
c.
If the dark spots cover more than 20 to 25% of the light-output surface, discard the
light guide cable.
d.
Inspect the light entry and exit surfaces of the light guide cable to ensure they are
smooth and clean. Debris deposits on these surfaces may result in insufficient
light output. Continued use of light guide cables with debris may result in
progressive damage to the laparoscope.
e.
Verify that the proximal and distal glass surfaces are clean and free of debris.
Remove any soil or debris deposits using:
appropriate cleaning pastes (supplied with the laparoscopes)
OR
cotton swabs soaked in alcohol
