6.4 Conversion into physical units

Drive-oriented physical parameters, such as e.g. speed P201, actual value of target
position P200, actual value of current P101 etc., cannot be directly transmitted in the
relevant physical unit.
One reason for this is that for many parameters the system requires higher accuracies
than the basic unit of a parameter could provide. So for position data, for example, it is
better to transmit the values in 1/10000 mm rather than mm.
Another reason is to make the application as system-independent as possible. Many
parameters such as speed, for example, are not specified in the normal unit rpm, but
in %. This ensures that at a preset speed of 100 % different drive types are always
moved at maximum speed.
In addition, parameters P001 gear reduction and P002 pitch enable you to work with
actual machine-oriented units. You can thus set the travel in mm or degrees, as it will
actually be executed on a machine.
In practice it is necessary to carry out corresponding conversions, in order to create
the reference to the actual physical units.

6.4.1 Conversion of position units

Position information is generally given in (mm) linear and (degree) rotative. Here
data type C4 is used (cf. Table 25). A C4 value of 12345678 therefore corresponds to
the value 1234.5678 mm or degree.
Position information can be defined application-specific as demonstrated in examples:
Example 1 Spindle:
Position information = [mm]
P001 (Gearbox factor)
P002 (Pitch)
