6.6.1 Charging the batteries
WARNING
Risk of injury due to explosive gases. Explosive gases can
develop while the batteries are charging. The following
safety instructions must be observed under all circumstances:
n Ensure sufficient ventilation when charging the
batteries in an enclosed room.
n Smoking and fire are not permitted.
n Sparks must be avoided.
n Do not cover the air vents in the trim..
NOTICE
Battery damage due to deep discharge. Extended ope-
ration with low battery capacity results in deep discharge
of the battery, causing damage. When driving with the bat-
tery discharged, the control unit of the power wheelchair
switches to power-saving creep speed.
The remaining battery capacity determines the range of the
C1000 DS power wheelchair. The battery capacity is influ-
enced by many factors. Besides the temperature, the age of
the batteries and the time and extent of driving, the way you
charge the batteries also has a considerable effect on their
capacity and thus on the range.
C1000 DS
For an optimum charging frequency, the following applies:
n The batteries can be charged at any time, regardless of
the remaining battery capacity.
n It takes about 8 hours until a discharged battery (only
one flashing segment) is fully charged. When the char-
ging process is complete, the battery charger can re-
main connected to the power wheelchair with no risk of
overcharging or damaging the battery. The battery char-
ger features a programmed recharging phase that will
maintain the battery capacity at the level that has been
reached.
n For daily use, connecting the charger overnight is recom-
mended so that the full capacity is available every day.
n If the wheelchair is not used for extended periods of
time, the batteries gradually discharge. If the power
wheelchair is not driven for extended periods of time, a
charging cycle must be carried out at least 1 x per week
in order to maintain the battery capacity. Removing the
fuse is recommended for extended periods of disuse.
n Total discharge of the batteries (deep discharge) should
be avoided.
n When the batteries are charging, the power wheelchair
control unit must be switched off to allow all of the
charging current to be fed into the battery.
