Industrial RFID system - Read/write head
5

Application planning

The BIS U-4A7 read/write head communicates with the
data carrier via radio signals in the ultra-high frequency
range, which are transmitted and received via the
integrated UHF antenna. This technology has the
advantage that, compared to inductive systems, a higher
read/write distance and thus a larger detection range can
be realized. To ensure that the UHF-RFID system achieves
optimum performance, there are a number of things that
need to be taken into account due to the technology.
The purpose of this chapter is to outline the technical
characteristics of UHF-RFID systems and, through
preliminary considerations, to help integrate the system
optimally into the place of use.
5.1

Detection range

For communication with the data carriers, the BIS U-4A7
transmits radio signals via the integrated antenna. The
radio signals are emitted in all directions, with the main
emission direction to the front along the center axis (see
Fig. 5-1, blue area). This area represents the desired
detection range. The lateral and rear radiation (red areas)
occur due to the technology and can lead to interactions if
several read/write heads are used in a confined space (see
chapter 5.2 on page 12 and chapter 5.3 on page 13).

The size of the areas can be increased or reduced by
adjusting the transmitting power, i.e. the read/write
distance can be increased or reduced as a result. In
principle, a higher transmitting power also enables a
greater read/write distance (see chapter 5.8 on
page 16).

Selection of the mounting location and
alignment
When selecting the installation location, ensure
that there is sufficient distance to workplaces
where people are permanently present (see
chapter 2.3 on page 7).
The BIS U-4A7 can be divided into three sections.
Connector area, mounting area (M30 body) and antenna
area (see Fig. 5-2).

Construction zones
Only the M30 body is intended for mounting, as this
provides the necessary stability (see Fig. 5-3). Brackets
from the accessories range (see www.balluff.com on the
product page) or specially manufactured supports can be
used for this purpose. It is important that the antenna area
is free of conductive materials (e.g. metal). The connector
area should provide sufficient space to be able to mount a
connection cable, taking into account the specified
bending radii.

The BIS U-4A7 should be oriented so that the detection
area optimally illuminates the location where data carriers
are to be detected. To ensure that the identification system
functions correctly, care must be taken to ensure that the
detection range of the antenna and, in particular, the line of
sight between the antenna and the data carrier is free of
electromagnetically effective materials (e.g. metal, liquids,
...), as these can influence the detection range of the
antenna and reduce the maximum range of the RFID
system or make it more difficult to detect data carriers (see
chapter 5.10 on page 18).
