7.
BEFORE dispensing a product sample from the reservoir, permanently seal the tubing above the
frangible connector.
Note: Once a sample is in the reservoir, proceed to the transfer procedure. The storage of
sample in the reservoir has been validated for up to 6 hours. You may use the 6-hour timeframe or
validate a different time for your institution. When Release Testing to allow the use of platelets for
up to 7 days (FDA-regulated facilities only), refer to the specific manufacturer's instructions for
7-Day Platelet Storage.
Note: If the vent on the reservoir inadvertently becomes wet and is allowed to dry, the sample
may not transfer to the culture bottle.
Note: After a sample has been transferred to the reservoir, do not return it to the platelet
product bag. The fluid that remains in the tubing above the frangible connector may be stripped
back to the platelet product bag.
Inoculate Microbial Culture Bottles, Vacuum Tubes, or Other Appropriate Containers
Note: If using a culture bottle, disinfect the culture bottle septum according to the instructions provided
by the microbial detection device manufacturer.
Note: If two bottles are to be inoculated, inoculate the aerobic bottle first. When inoculating the
anaerobic bottle, use the flow control clamp to stop the fluid flow BEFORE all of the volume is emptied
from the reservoir.
Note: If both aerobic and anaerobic bottles are to be inoculated, add 0.5 mL to the total sample volume
transferred to the reservoir. The extra 0.5 mL is not needed for single sample transfer and should remain
in the tubing to ensure that air is not introduced into the anaerobic bottle.
1.
Open the adapter cover.
2.
Remove the needle cap.
3.
Position the bottle adapter directly above the septum of the culture bottle and push the needle
through the septum into the culture bottle.
Note: You may squeeze the flow control clamp to control or stop the flow into the culture bottle.
Note: When you are removing the needle from the bottle, squeeze the flow control clamp to
minimize the possibility that product will drip from the needle. After the needle is removed, it is
not necessary to squeeze the flow control clamp, because the needle is self-sealing.
4.
Remove the needle from the culture bottle. If additional bottles or sample tubes are to be
inoculated, repeat steps 3 and 4.
5.
When finished, discard the Blood Component Sampling Set according to your institution's SOP.
