Procedures for Use
Connect the Blood Component Sampling Set Using a Sterile Connection Device
1.
Ensure that the white pinch clamp on the blood component sampling set is closed before
beginning a sterile connection procedure.
2.
Sterile connect the Blood Component Sampling Set to the product bag using the line with the
white pinch clamp and the tubing end.
Note: Refer to the sterile connection device manufacturer's operation instructions to sterile
connect the Blood Component Sampling Set to a product bag.

Obtain a Sample Using the Reservoir
1.
If the Platelet product has been stored in more than one bag, transfer the entire Platelet product to
the Platelet product bag that has the Blood Component Sampling Set attached.
2.
Gently mix the product bag to evenly distribute the product and ensure that a representative
sample will be obtained.
3.
Break the frangible connector above the reservoir.
4.
Open the white pinch clamp to allow the desired volume of product to flow into the reservoir.
Note: For sample volume, refer to the IFU of the microbial detection device manufacturer. When
Release Testing to allow the use of platelets for up to 7 days (FDA-regulated facilities only), refer
to the specific manufacturer's instructions for 7-Day Platelet Storage.
Note: Do not squeeze the product bag.
5.
Close the white pinch clamp when the desired volume is obtained.
6.
Label the Blood Component Sampling Set, culture bottles and/or other containers according to
your SOP.
