Small manufacturing tolerances cannot be avoided during the production of the engine just as little as small irregularities
and unevenness of the material. In addition, there are deformations due to thermal and mechanical stress. Therefore,
when running the new engine, a certain running-in time has to be observed. During the run-in time, engine parts tune to
one another, whereby maximal capacity is reached and premature wear is thus prevented.
In the first two or three tankfuls let the engine run alternatively between longer idle speeds (approx. 15
sec.) and short full throttle (approx. 3 sec., gradually increase to 10 sec.).
In this phase, do not let the engine run for a longer time without load by overspeed.
Also do not drive for a longer time under full load.

Depending on the mix that is used, the spark plug, the muffler and the environmental conditions such as air pres-
sure and air humidity, small modifications in the setting of the carburettor might be necessary.
Fine tuning of idle speed and full throttle can only be carried out with a well run in engine. In the basic
setting of the carburettor, the mix is set somehow richer.
This is indicated by the strong white smoke emission from the exhaust pipe.
Setting the idle speed-mix adjusting screw
-
Run the engine to bring it to operating temperature.
If the engine takes fuel with difficulty, then the idle mix is too lean.
-
Turn the idle mix adjusting screw anticlockwise (towards the left) to make the mix „richer".
Correct the setting stepwise by turning the idle mix adjusting screw "L"
by approx. 1/8 of a turn respectively towards the left

If the engine takes fuel spluttering and with a strong production of smoke, then the mix is too rich.
If the engine takes fuel spluttering and with a strong production of smoke, then the mix is too rich.
-
Turning the screw clockwise (towards the right) makes the mix leaner (the fuel proportion is reduced)
In this case, correct the setting of the idle mix-adjusting screw "L" stepwise by approx. 1/8 of a turn respectively

Setting the main nozzle needle
-
Lift the actuated axis from the bottom and drive the engine at operating state temperature shortly at full speed.
Now you can correct the setting of the full throttle mix at the main nozzle needle in steps of 1/8 of a turn.
-
Turn the main nozzle needle clockwise if the mix should be "leaner" and
-
anticlockwise to make the mix "richer" (to increase the proportion of fuel)
For a long engine life, you should prefer a slightly rich carburettor adjustment, but leave the setting lean so that
the engine runs perfectly.
After each engine running (tank filling), allow for a sufficient cooling phase.
ATTENTION! It is always extremely important not to make the mix too lean!
Keep in mind that the engine lubrication is effected via the oil contained in the fuel.
Too little fuel in the mix causes engine overheating and piston seizure because of faulty lubrication.
During operation, a light white trail of smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe should always be visible.
If not, stop the engine immediately and enrich the mix.
Also make sure that sufficient air circulates around the cylinder head, in order to avoid overheating. If
necessary, effect a corresponding opening in the car body.
The optimal engine operating temperature is approx. 100 – 10°. Check the temperature with a drop of water on the cool-
ing head: If the water evaporates abruptly, the engine is too hot.
If the water evaporates abruptly, the engine is too hot.
If the water evaporates abruptly, the engine is too hot.
With operating temperature, the water evaporates in 3 – 4 seconds.
You know that the engine is run in when it can be cranked up in cold state without spark plug and without notice-
able resistance.
Now you can operate the engine with full power.
Restoring factory settings
As basic setting, unscrew the idle mix adjusting screw by 1.25 rotations.
-
Insert the screw all the way in until it lays straight.
-
Now unscrew the needle again by 1.5 rotations.
The basic setting of the main nozzle needle is 1.75 rotations.
If the screw is screwed in too firmly, the needle as well as the needle seat can be destroyed!
