12. Getting Started with the Engine

a) General information
Before you are using your model for the first time and start the engine, you should pay
attention to the following points.
• Check whether all screw connections are tight on your model. Turnable parts have to be easily mov-
able, put there must be no clearance in the bearing.
• Charge the transmitter and the receiver rechargeable batteries according to the manufacturer's
instructions or use batteries with adequate power reserves.
• Only use brand fuel, that consists of a mix of methanol, 15-20% oil and 15-30% nitromethane.
Since the higher-quality model fuels have oils with wear inhibiting additives added, it has proved
worthwhile in practice to add approx. 3% caster oil during the running-in phase.
The oil carbon formed during combustion polishes the contact surface of the piston and
therefore considerably speeds up the running-in phase.
• Use the correct glow plug. You will need an extremely cold plug with a short thread (eg "Fireball
Super cool" (short) item no. 22 41 03-62).
• Before starting the engine for the first time, the foamed material of the air filter is to be saturated
with a suitable air filter oil (eg item no. 22 86 80-62).
• For the first start activities, the model should be placed on a suitable surface (run in stand) so that
the wheels can move freely, if the speed of the engine gets so high during adjustment works on the
carburettor that the centrifugal clutch engages.
• In order to be able to adjust the carburettor without any problems, the car body isn't installed for
the first test drives.
• Only let the engine run with reduced speed during the first runs and make sure that there is a suffi-
ciently "rich" carburettor setting (high fuel share in the absorbed petrol/air mix).
• Once you have stopped operating the model, you should definitely treat the engine with a special oil
(eg engine care oil "After Run", item no. 22 91 05-62).
The sour combustion residues may otherwise lead to corrosive damages on the inside of
the engine.
