STEERING ALLOWANCE ADJUSTMENT

4.7 STEERING ALLOWANCE ADJUSTMENT
The steering allowance should never be excessive
if driving is not to be impaired.
Check that the movement is not caused by loose
linkage nuts and tighten all the nuts of the tie-rods
and ball joints.
If the movement is in the pinion to ring gear cou-
pling, the height of the ring gear will need to be
adjusted by inserting spacers inside the hub.
u Remove the front and rear protection cover of
the steering column [see 5.1].
u Remove the footboard [see 5.2].
Unhook the spring (1) and lift the steering column
(2) far enough to be able to take out the pin (3) and
the pinion (4).
Undo the screw (5) and take out the ring gear (6).
Put one or two 11 x 17 x 0.5 mm spacers (7)
(according to requirements) inside the hub so that
the ring gear is raised higher than the pinion.
Line up the front wheels and refit the ring gear (6)
with the arrow pointing forwards, then fully tighten
the screw (5).
Turn the steering column so that the hole of the pin
(3) is at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the
machine, and then fit the pinion (4) so that the pin is
fully inserted in its seat.
Push the end of the steering column (2) right down
in the hole of the bush (8), check that the teeth of
the ring gear in the new position are correctly
meshed with those of the pinion and finally, refit the
washer (9) and the spring (1).
If the movement is still there after having removed
all the spacers, check it and if necessary, replace
the ring gear/pinion unit [see 6.3], or look for other
possible causes.
