Operation

6.6.1 Charging the batteries

WARNING
Risk of injury due to explosive gases. Explosive gases can
develop while the batteries are charging. The following
safety instructions must be observed under all circumstances:
Ensure sufficient ventilation when charging the batter-
ies in an enclosed room.
Smoking and fire are not permitted.
 Sparks must be avoided.
Do not cover the air vents in the trim.
NOTICE
Battery damage due to deep discharge. Driving for
longer periods with low battery charge level will result in
deep discharge and damage to the battery. When the bat-
tery is low the control unit of the power wheelchair switches
to creep speed to save power.
The remaining battery capacity determines the range of the
power wheelchair. The battery capacity is influenced by
many factors. Besides the temperature, the age of the bat-
teries and the time and extent of driving, the way you charge
the batteries also has a considerable effect on their capacity
and thus on the range.

The batteries reach their full capacity only after 20 – 30
charge cycles. Only if the full capacity of the batteries has
been reached can the power wheelchair achieve the stated
range.
At temperatures of < 0 °C the battery capacity drops by up
to 35 % in relation to the capacity for an outside tempera-
ture of 20 °C. This shortens the range of the power wheel-
chair accordingly. Moreover the charge level displayed on
the control panel can differ more significantly from the actual
battery capacity.
For an optimum charging frequency, the following applies:
The batteries can be charged at any time, regardless of
the remaining battery capacity.
It takes about 8 hours until a discharged battery (only
one flashing segment) is fully charged. When the charg-
ing process is complete, the battery charger can remain
connected to the power wheelchair with no risk of over-
charging or damaging the battery. The battery charger
features a programmed recharging phase that will
maintain the battery capacity at the level that has been
reached.
For daily use, connecting the charger overnight is recom-
mended so that the full capacity is available every day.
