S p a r k p l u g i n s p e c t i o n
The spark plug is one of the most important
of the engine c o m p o n e n t s and is the easiest
to inspect. B y examining the condition of the
spark plug w e c a n , to s o m e extent, determine
the condition of the engine.
If the engine is operating correctly, and the
machine is being ridden correctly, the white
p o r c e l a i n
i n s u l a t o r
a r o u n d
the
c e n t e r
electrode will be a m e d i u m to light tan color.
If the porcelain is very dark brown or black
color and the firing end is wet w i t h oil or
sooty, the spark plug may be too " c o l d " .
A
" h o t t e r " spark plug may be required.
This
Situation is c o m m o n during engine break-in.
If the insulator is glazed and very light or
white in color, or if the electrodes s h o w signs
of melting, a " c o l d e r " spark plug may be
required.
