Piezoelectric force sensors have a number of advan
tages: they are extraordinarily compact, offer extremely
high overload capacity when the measuring chain is cor
rectly laid out, and show negligible displacement. This
results in high rigidity and therefore excellent dynamic
properties.
But there is some information to take into account, to
ensure maximum measurement accuracy and high oper
ational reliability.
14.1 Functionality of piezoelectric sensors
A piezoelectric force sensor consists of single‐crystal
sensor elements and components used for force applica
tion.
The forces acting on the crystal displace the positive and
negative atoms of the crystal lattice. This produces
charges underneath and above, as shown in Fig. 14.1.
The displacement of the atoms is proportional to the
force applied and thus also to the charges occurring on
the crystal surfaces.
