4.2.5 Notes on Applying the Orthosis

CAUTION
Using the orthosis without shoes
In certain cases, this can lead to falling caused by:
► Slipping when walking on smooth floors (tiles), since the foot component of the orthosis does not have a shoe
profile on the sole.
► Altered swing phase triggering behaviour due to incorrect heel height.
→ Only use the orthosis with suitable shoes and and with shoes that have the specified heel height established
at the initial fitting.
CAUTION
Tying tall footwear (above the ankle)
In certain cases, this can lead to falling caused by:
► Transmission of incorrect forefoot load data to the electronics. By tying footwear too tight above the ankle, the
spring element is bent even while it is not under load, which can distort important sensor signals for the con
trol unit.
→ In case of footwear that extends above the ankle, ensure the laces are not tied to tight.
CAUTION
Foreign objects between the leg and orthosis
This can lead to pressure points on the leg caused by:
► Foreign objects at contact points between the leg and the orthosis.
→ Smooth out wrinkles in the padding material.
→ Check the leg for pressure points.
CAUTION
Improper fit of the orthosis
In certain cases, this can lead to injuries due to falling or skin damage caused by:
► Insufficient support/hold by the orthosis shells.
→ Remove and reapply the orthosis immediately.
→ Observe the instructions for putting on and removing the orthosis.
CAUTION
Pinching skin in the area of the closures
This can lead to injuries/congestion caused by:
► Disruption of blood circulation to the skin in the area of the closures.
→ Do not over tighten the closures when putting on the orthosis.
CAUTION
Volume fluctuations of the leg or problems with the fit of the orthosis
This can lead to injuries, friction and local pressure caused by:
► Improper fit (too tight/too loose) of the orthosis shells.
→ Sensory disturbances and skin damage require special attention in regard to the fit of the orthosis. Check skin
in the affected area daily.
→ Consult a doctor or CPO in case of any signs of skin damage, even if they are only minor.
→ If the improper fit is the result of weight gain or loss, have new orthosis shells fabricated based on a new
plaster cast.
