Handling, Functionality, Risks

After adjusting 'SWP Dynamic Factor', a harmonious gait pattern can also be achieved by adjusting 'SWP Knee
Angle Threshold'.
SWP Extension Damping
This is the resistance against the extension of the orthosis side at the end of the swing phase. It affects the abrupt
ness with which the orthosis side is stopped at full extension. However, the value also influences the duration of the
swing phase. The higher the value of 'SWP Extension Damping', the later the leg reaches full extension. This
damping becomes active at an angle of approx. 20° and continues until full extension.
Adjustment:
Adjust the parameter 'SWP Extension Damping' so that there is no uncomfortably hard end stop, but not so much
that the patient feels the need to wait for the extension of the orthosis. During the adjustment process, have the
patient walk at several noticeably different speeds.
Stance Function Timer [*20ms](only in expert mode)
At the end of this time in a standing position with the knee joint slightly flexed (knee angle
approx. 5° to approx. 20°), high stance phase damping (STP Flexion Damping) is automatic
ally selected (STA mode). This makes it possible, for example, to stand on uneven surfaces or
slopes. When the leg is extended, this mode is deactivated. This parameter can also be set to
off.
Adjustment:
Consult the patient to determine the time period before standing mode is activated, or whether
this mode should be turned off.
8 Handling, Functionality, Risks
The orthotic system encompasses a microprocessor-controlled orthosis knee joint with hydraulic stance and swing
phase control.
Prior to each use, verify whether the orthosis battery is charged and the orthosis is undamaged and functional. To
avoid skin irritation due to perspiration or friction, do not wear the orthosis directly on the skin. Thin stockings
made of washable, moisture absorbing material are suitable for wearing under the orthosis. Make sure that the
stocking is free of wrinkles, or pressure points may develop.
After putting on the orthosis, verify its firm fit by pulling on it. First-time users in particular have to learn how to
handle the orthosis. Donning and doffing, sitting, standing, walking and especially walking backwards require
practice. Your doctor or Orthotist can provide you with additional advice on orthosis training. Special attention was
paid to the materials used for the orthosis. They were tested for skin tolerance. Should skin changes nevertheless
develop on your leg, please consult your doctor or Orthotist promptly.
Please consult your doctor or Orthotist if you experience any other problems despite correct handling.

8.1 Putting on the Orthosis

INFORMATION
Instruct the patient to inspect the orthosis for proper functionality, wear and damage prior to each use.
The position in which the patient puts on or takes off the orthosis varies. It is best to start in the sitting position.
