Safety
CAUTION
Hazards when empty battery mode is activated
Depending on the settings (established by the CPO using C-Soft), the orthosis either selects "high flexion damp
ing" (high safety/reduced comfort) or "low damping" (less safety/higher activity) when empty battery mode is
activated.
In certain situations, this can lead to falling caused by:
► Altered damping behaviour of the orthosis.
→ The CPO has to inform the patient of the selected damping behaviour in empty battery mode (High or Low).
→ For the "low damping" setting in empty battery mode, the patient must have the necessary muscular and cog
nitive abilities to control a freely moving knee joint without stance phase stability.
→ From empty battery mode, operating mode (1st mode) can be reactivated by charging the orthosis.
CAUTION
Improper charging of the battery
This may lead to falling caused by:
► Altered damping behaviour of the orthosis.
► Malfunctioning of the orthosis.
→ Instruct the patient in the charging process.
→ To charge the battery, only use battery chargers that have been approved by Ottobock.
CAUTION
Orthosis not set upright during the charging process and for storage
In certain cases, this can lead to falling caused by:
► Altered damping behaviour of the orthosis due to accumulated air in the hydraulic unit.
→ Store the orthosis in an upright position only.
→ Charge the orthosis in an upright position only.
→ Before using the orthosis, verify that the damping behaviour corresponds to the chosen mode.
→ Take note of noises or inconsistent damping behaviour.
→ Walk 10 to 20 steps in order to activate the automatic bleeding process.

4.2.4 Notes on Alignment/Adjustment

CAUTION
Very high value for the elevated flexion resistance setting (STP Flexion Damping Plus)
When elevated flexion resistance (STP Flexion Damping Plus) is set to a very high value, problems may result
while walking down stairs and ramps. Elevated damping may still be active during the first step (especially when
the parameter 'STP Flexion Plus Time [*20ms]' is set to a long time). This prevents correct flexion of the knee
joint.
This may lead to falling caused by:
► Unexpected, high stance phase damping during the transition from a level surface to the first step of a stair
case or when negotiating a ramp.
→ Familiarise the patient with the altered behaviour of the system after changing this setting.
→ Point out to the patient that special caution is required for the first step on a ramp or stairs. Before negotiating
a ramp or stairs, pause briefly and test whether regular stance phase damping (STP Flexion Damping) is act
ive.
CAUTION
Damage to the plug contacts of the BionicLink connection
This may lead to falling caused by:
► Unexpected changes to the movement pattern due to data transmission errors or termination of the connec
tion.
→ After completing the adjustments, ensure that the plug cover on the hydraulic unit is completely closed.
