3.2.5. Auto-rotation

The term auto-rotation refers to a state of flight in which a helicopter can be landed
safely without the motor running, e.g. if the motor should fail. Negative collective
pitch is set on the main rotor, and the airflow through the blades during a fast
descent maintains a high rotational speed. Just before the helicopter touches down,
the model can be flared out using the energy in the spinning blades, allowing one
safe attempt at landing. The technique is only successful if the approach is correct.
This manoeuvre is difficult but important, and to simplify it as far as possible the
offers an auto-rotation switch which can be used for practising „autos" as

well as for coping with actual motor cuts. If you install a two-stage switch at the
outside left-hand position on the transmitter, and connect it to socket S3, you can
use it to switch from normal flight to auto-rotation.
What does the switch do when you select auto-rotation?
The collective pitch à throttle mixer, which is automatically active in the Helicopter
model type, is disabled. For auto-rotation practice you can set the throttle to any
setting you like within the range 0 to 24% using the auto-rotation throttle (A-ROT TH)
setting. The travels for collective pitch are increased to 100%, so that the rotor blades
can be moved to the extreme angles required for this manoeuvre.
Mechanically mixed rotor heads only:
For normal flying you should set collective pitch travel to 75% of full servo travel.
This ensures that sufficient collective pitch travel is available when you select
AUTO-ROTATION (i.e. full servo travel).
120º rotor heads only:
For normal flying you should set collective pitch travel in the CYCLIC menu. Full
servo travel is also available when you select AUTO-ROTATION.
This is the procedure for setting the auto-rotation throttle value:
Procedure
Select the A-ROT TH setting in the MIX menu, then

move to the second line.
Set auto-rotation throttle
2.
e.g. 20% (range is 0% to 24%)
Continue as in summary sheet

TIP ! For electric helicopters A-ROT THR should be set to 0% (motor stopped).
Notes:
§
For auto-rotation practice adjust A-ROT TH to the point where the motor runs at
a reliable idle, but does not drive the rotor. The centrifugal clutch must not
engage at this speed.
§
If you wish, you can cut the motor during an auto-rotation using the motor OFF
switch (S1).
