 Evergreen hedges or conifers are pruned before the first
shoots in spring (end of March) or in autumn before the first
frost.
 Hedges of flowering shrubs should, if trimming is required,
be cut immediately after flowering.
 Shaping and pruning can always be carried out between
March and September for all varieties.
Observe also the weather conditions:
 Spring pruning should not be done at freezing temperatures,
since the cuts produced heal very poorly. In addition,
branches break off easily at freezing temperatures. A good
day for cutting is therefore a dry and sunny day without
frost.
 Summer pruning should not be carried out when it is too hot
and the sun is too bright; the freshly cut shoots dry out and
die off. Cut early in the day therefore, in the late afternoon
or on a cloudy day.
 Do not cut either during heavy rain; the moisture will
promote the growth of fungi and pests.
Simply ask a specialist who can tell you about the right time for
cutting your hedge and provide you with useful tips.
Working with the hedge trimmer
Before cutting, make sure that there are no breeding
birds or wild animals in the hedge. With breeding
animals you should shift the cutting, in order not to
drive away the old animals.
Hold the hedge shear with both hands on a safe
distance from the body.
Keep children, bystanders and animals at a distance (15 m
min.) from your working area.
Scare animals off the hedge before starting to cut in order to
prevent them from being injured.
Operate the hedge trimmer only with safe standing position.
Never work with the hedge trimmer above shoulder height.
Stop the hedge trimmer when moving to another work place.
Do not use the hedge trimmer to pick up or remove wood
pieces or other objects.
Start trimming with the cutting device moving.
Never touch the cutting device with your hands during
operation.
Never get in contact with the running cutting device with
metallic fences or the ground.
Adjustments on the hedge trimmer
You can use the hedge trimmer to trim high and wide
hedges as well as low hedges.
The hedge trimmer head (35) can be adjusted within a
working angle range of 195 °. Adjust the hedge trimmer
head to the correct working position before starting your
work.
Press the engagement levers at the top (M) and bottom
(N) and swivel the head of the hedge trimmer to the
desired position.
Release the engagement levers again. The hedge trimmer
head engages.

 The maximal diameter to cut depends on the wood's type,
age, moisture and hardness.
Therefore cut very thick branches using branch shears to
your desired length before trimming the hedge.
/
Due to its double sided knives the hedge shears
can be guided forward and backward or by oscillating
movements from one to another side.
 Cut the sides of the hedge first.
 Cut the hedge from the bottom up.
While cutting, slightly tilt the cutting device in the direction of
the cutting movement.
 Move forward slowly and in a controlled manner.
Cut the hedge in trapezium shape. This prevents the
lower hedge area from growing bare due to insufficient light.
As a rule of thumb: 10 cm inclination per metre hedge
height.
For a 2 m high hedge having a width of 80 cm at its base this
means that its crown has a width of 40 cm, for example.
 Now cut the top side of the hedge.
 Stretch a guide over the complete length of the hedge when
you want to shorten the upper edge of the hedge evenly.
 Trim in several passes if you have to cut down a large
portion of the hedge.
Stop with your work often when cutting
hedges
for extended periods and oil the cutting
device. The
oil ensures easy movement of the
cutting device.
 After work slide the blade protection (14) again on the cutting
device (35).
Working with the power pruner
Keep a safety distance of 10 m to overhead
power lines. Do not use the power pruner near
inflammable liquids or gases.
Notes on tree care
To protect animals and breeding birds, pruning is
prohibited from 01 March to 30 September.
When is the right time for tree care measures?
Observe the right time when pruning to prevent harming your
trees unnecessarily.
Recommendations for pruning:
 End of winter (January - March): Removing branches in the
fine branch area promotes strong new shoots and is
relatively gentle on the trees.
 Spring till start of summer (April - June): During the growth
phase, the development of new shoots is favoured by
moderate pruning.
 Trimming (cutting of dead wood) can always be done.
Observe also the weather conditions:
 Spring pruning should not be done at freezing temperatures,
since the cuts produced heal very poorly. In addition,
branches break off easily at freezing temperatures. A good
day for cutting is therefore a dry day without frost.
