Voice Prosthesis Cleaning
The following information is a brief overview of the proper care
and maintenance of the voice prosthesis. Please refer to the Voice
Prosthesis Cleaning System instructions for use (supplied with
Blom-Singer Flushing Device) for complete instructions on how
to use the flushing device.
The purpose of cleaning the voice prosthesis is to remove
blockage of its lumen that impairs the patient's ability to voice.
The flushing device provides a means for careful cleaning of the
voice prosthesis while in the patient's TE puncture. Caution: Use
only the Blom-Singer Flushing Device. Do not insert foreign
objects into the voice prosthesis. Inserting objects other than the
flushing device may cause dislodgment of the voice prosthesis or
its components.
The user's hands should always be washed with soap and water
prior to using the flushing device.
Cleaning of the voice prosthesis should only be done in front of
a mirror with a bright light focused directly on the stoma so that
the open end of the prosthesis is clearly visible.
If unable to voice, repeat the flushing procedure. If still unable
to voice, remove the voice prosthesis device, wash with a mild
detergent, and rinse under a strong flush of tap water.
Insertion of the Voice Prosthesis
Please refer to the diagrams located at the back of this instruction
manual.
Note: Prior to use of the voice prosthesis, check the valve
mechanism to ensure it is intact and working properly: the valve
of the Low Pressure Voice Prosthesis should close flat inside the
prosthesis. The slit valve on the Duckbill Voice Prosthesis should
be closed without evidence of gapping.
1. Insert the voice prosthesis only while using a close-up mirror
and a bright light focused directly into the stoma. Place the
tip of the inserter into the open end of the voice prosthesis
(see diagram 3). Avoid squeezing or damaging the valve of the
voice prosthesis. Handle the voice prosthesis by the base of the
