MOWING BLADES
INSPECTING THEIR CONDITION
The mowing blades must be sharp, balanced, straight, undamaged and not deformed. Blunt, incorrectly
sharpened, damaged or deformed mowing blades cause grass to be torn out of the ground, damage to lawns
and mediocre collection of the mowed grass in the grass catcher. A worn out or damaged mowing blade may
break and cause serious injuries. For this reason, it is important to regularly inspect the condition of the mowing
blades.
The intensity of wear on the mowing blades depends on the location and time of use. If the mower is
used on sandy or rocky soil or is frequently used in dry weather, the mowing blades are subjected to
a higher load and a higher level of wear occurs. In such a case, inspect the condition of the blades
more often.
Most frequent type of wear:
Blunt blades - cause poor cutting of vegetation, increase the stress and load on the entire mowing deck.
ƒ
Curved tips - result in unsatisfactory mowing between the rotors.
ƒ
Ground-off paddles - cause poor transfer of the mowed material to the grass catcher. A piece of the paddle
ƒ
may come loose and fly out of the mowing deck.
Bent blade - results in varying mowing height of the vegetation and may tear out turf.
ƒ
Incorrect position - the blades may hit each other and destroy each other or the entire mowing deck.
ƒ
How to perform the inspection:
Check the condition of the blades visually. It is ideal to use an inspection pit or a lifting platform and to check
ƒ
the condition of the blades directly on the mowing deck.
Another option is to perform a visual inspection from the ground with the mowing deck raised to the transport
ƒ
position.

SHARPENING THE BLADES

Whenever handling the mowing blades, always use heavy-duty work gloves.
If you do not have the necessary knowledge or tools, always contact the vendor or an authorised
service centre.
Never touch the mowing blades until they come to a complete stop.
Removing mowing blades
Lift up the front part of the mower as described in chapter
ƒ
Use one hand to hold the blade so that it does not rotate and screw out the bolt (1). The right rotor
ƒ
has a left-hand thread, the left rotor has a right-hand thread. In the event that you are unsure, always
loosen the thread in the direction of the cutting edge of the blade. Remove the spring washer (2)
and the grooved washer (3). Break pins (4) are inserted in between the blade and the carrier, the
entire assembly can be slid out after the bolts are screwed out.
The left and the right blade and their bolts differ, and therefore it is advisable at this point to mark
ƒ
which is which so that they are not interchanged during reassembly.
For higher work productivity, we recommend to have a second set of blades ready and use them as
replacement for the blunt blades, that you can sharpen later.
Check condition
Check that both mowing blades are not deformed, do not have any grooves or tear and that they generally
ƒ
are not worn out. A worn out, damaged or deformed mowing blade must be replaced.
