1. Introduction and Essentials
Congratulations on your new Tern electrically power assisted bicycle (e-bike).
INFO: This manual covers e-bikes whose electric motor ONLY provides assistance when
the bike is being pedaled. This type of e-bike is called a Pedelec (pedal electric cycle) or EPAC
(Electronically Power Assisted Cycles). It will be referred to as a Pedelec in this manual.
Before you begin riding, make sure you read and fully understand this manual, as well as
all other documentation and manuals included with the bike. This chapter provides an
overview and summary of the key points of the manual, and the cited sections provide
even more information for anything that you don't completely understand.
INFO: Not all Tern bicycles have ALL of the features described in this manual.
1.A. Safe Riding
WARNING: Cycling on a Pedelec requires increased vigilance compared
with riding a bike with no electric assistance. Before your first ride, have your
Dealer explain any functions or features that you do not understand.
WARNING: If your Pedelec is powered on, the motor assist will begin automatically when
you press down on the pedals. This immediate addition of power may pose a threat if you are
not prepared to begin riding, or if you are still mounting the bike. To avoid a serious accident,
make sure you are already on the bike and ready to ride before powering on the motor.
• Before riding your e-bike on the road, take the time to familiarize yourself with the operation of
the bike in an easy-to-navigate, safe place where there are no other vehicles or pedestrians.
• Always start with a minimal amount of motor assistance and gradually increase from there.
WARNING: With a Pedelec, you may be able to ride at faster speeds, and for longer
periods, than you are normally used to. Remember, the faster you ride, the longer it
takes to safely stop. As your speed increases, so does your braking distance.
• Be prepared to slow down sooner than usual when approaching turns.
• Avoid distractions when riding, and maintain your focus on the road in front of you. Riding at
speed means you will have less time to react to any sudden changes in your riding environment.
WARNING: Always wear an approved helmet when riding your bike, and
follow the helmet manufacturer's instructions for fit, use and care.
WARNING: Always ride defensively.
• Any cyclist is at risk when sharing the road, so it is important to dress
and ride responsibly. Any collision with another vehicle or pedestrian
can cause serious injury or death to all parties involved.
• Pedestrians and vehicles in your riding vicinity may have difficulty judging how quickly you are
riding, and you will have less time to judge the speed and direction in which they are traveling.
• Dress to be seen. Wear bright colors and reflective gear.
• When riding, obey all traffic rules and provide clear signals to others sharing the road.
INFO: Obey local laws: Laws governing Pedelecs may vary by country, state and municipality. It
is the rider's responsibility to know and obey all local regulations when riding on public roads.
1.B. Before Riding
WARNING: Make sure the bike is safely adjusted to fit you properly.
• If your bicycle is too large or too small for you, you may lose control and fall (4.A).
