6.5 Coaxial i n c i d e n t Illuminator
Coaxial illumination is available for flat spe-
cular subjects such as integrated circuits or
metal sectipns. The light from a 6 V / 2 0 W
halogen lamp is directed aiong the two beam
paths. Built-in polarising filters eliminate
stray reflections.
The M7S Stereomicroscoperequiresafilter-
holder with quarter-wave foil in front of the
objective (fig. 3), so that complete extinction
does not result. The degree of extinction is
varied by rotating the quarter-wave foil.
The lamp housing and the stereomicroscope
together form a compact unit which fits be-
tween the optics carrier and the phototube
(see section 16.5).
- Remove the binocular tube (see section 3).
- Fit the coaxial illuminator to the optics car-
rier so that the lamp housing is on the right
and pointing backwardsat45°. Manoeuvre
it into position, ensuring that the locating
screw engages the guide, and tighten it.
- Position the binocular tube on the coaxial
illuminator and secure it.
For photography with the coaxial illuminator,
a quartz plate must be built into the camera.

tion booklet M2 232.
Note:' The coaxial illuminator introduces a
magnification factor of 1.5*.
6.6 V e r t i c a l i n c i d e n t I l l u m i n a t i o n
A prism enables the concentrated light beam
from the 6 V / 1 0 W low-voltage lamp to be
directed vertically downwards on to the ob-
ject so that depressions or holes can be illu-
minated (fig. 4).
- Attach the 6 V / 1 0 W low-voltage lamp to
the mount of the main objective (see sec-
tion 6.2).
- Fit the mount of the prism to the ring of the
main objective or to the mount of the addi-
tional objective.
- Align the prism (62) towards the column
of the stand and secure it.
- Position the low-voltage lamp horizontally
so that the light beam impinges on the
prism.
- Focus the light beam and illuminate the
object as well as possible by displacing the
prism.
