5.2.2. Combining the BNS with other protective equipment.
In most cases it is likely that the BNS will be worn with some other form of body protection.
Guidance for use with third party protective equipment.
It must be stated that Alpinestars does not recommend the use of the BNS in conjunction
with third party equipment
- however, where this is not possible the following advice MUST be followed:
Items which include shoulder protection:
The shoulder pads (2) MUST sit directly on top of the shoulders - they cannot interfere or sit
on top of shoulder protectors.
Items which offer roost protection (protection against lofted stones
Roost protectors must be put on AFTER the BNS. It is suggested that these protectors are
separated into their front and rear parts and that these are attached (using a cable tie or
equivalent) to the X-Strap Hooks (5).
Items which offer impact protection
In general, any protection jacket should be put on AFTER the BNS - however if this causes
problems then the Neck Support may sit on top of chest and back protectors PROVIDED the
shoulder pads (2) sit on top of the shoulders. This may require the user to use the next size
up of Neck Support.
5.3. Emergency Opening Procedure
NOTE: Whenever an injury is suspected it is best if services, including the removal
of the BNS in accordance with the instructions set forth below, are rendered by
trained medical personnel.
There is a possibility that in the aftermath of an accident that it may be required to remove
the BNS from the user as quickly as possible with the injured rider still lying on the ground.
The Bionic Neck Support is designed in a special way which makes this possible:
1. If the rider is lying face down, they require to be carefully rolled onto their back. This al-
lows their airway to be checked and gives access to the Quick Release Locking System (4).
2. Open the Quick Release Locking System
3. Facing the rider – hold the left part of the BNS in position while carefully opening the right
part of the BNS as far as it will go. The Rear Stabilizer (10) will disengage from the frame.
4. To separate the left & right frame pieces, pull the right side of the frame vertically up until
it stops then keep this upward force applied while starting to close the BNS. The two frame
pieces will pop apart.
5. Once disengaged remove the frame from the rider by pulling the two halves carefully away
from each other.

6. Care and Maintenance
Caring for your Bionic Neck Support
After each use excess dirt should be removed from the BNS. This can be done by using a
damp cloth or rinsing the device under cold running water. High Pressure washers should
NOT be used as these could risk damage to some parts. Do NOT use any strong solvent-
based cleaners, as these may damage the performance of the foam pieces.
When not in use the BNS should be stored in a cool, dry place, preferably in the supplied
packaging. Every few months it is recommended that the 'after accident' checks outlined
below are carried out. If it is felt that product has degraded such that it must be disposed of,
this should be carried out in accordance with local waste regulations.
Checking the BNS after an accident
After any accident (regardless of whether your head hits the ground or not) it is important to
check the BNS for any damage. You should check that:
• There are no cracks or bits of material missing from the main Frame Members (14, 15) or
plastic pieces –see the guidance below regarding the Attachment Plate (9).
• The brace can open and close normally without obstruction.
• There are no large pieces of the foam parts missing.
Small scratches on the frame or foam parts should not be a problem, but if you are in any
doubt about the condition of the BNS, it MUST be checked over by an Alpinestars dealer. As
a guide the device (or the problem part) should be replaced if any of the damage in the list
above is detected.
