INSTRUCTIONS FOR DIRECT SOCKET PRODUCTION
WARNING: Obey the following steps. If you do not obey and make changes to the steps, you can create safety risks
for the patient and assistant technician. You can also create an unusable socket.
Direct Socket production is divided into three phases: preparation, casting, and finishing.
Preparation
Examine Hip Joint Strength
Examine the strength of the hip joint without the prosthesis (Fig. 1).
1. Tell the patient to lie down on the bench.
2. Examine the strength in anterior, posterior, medial, and lateral direction. Use your hand to push down against
the residual limb. Tell the patient to push the limb up against your hand.
Examine Flexion for Contracture
Examine the movement of the hip for a flexion contracture (Fig. 2).
Tell the patient to:
1. Pull the knee of the sound side up towards the head.
2. Extend the hip on the other side.
Liner Size Selection
To select the correct liner size, measure the circumference 4 cm above the distal end of the residual limb (Fig. 3).
NOTE: A wrong liner size can lead to an uncomfortable socket. If you make an uncomfortable socket, you will have
to make a new socket.
Patient Position During Socket Casting
• Amputees with good muscle response must lie on their side during socket casting (Fig. 4).
• Amputees with bad muscle response must lie on their back during socket casting (Fig. 4).
Attaching the Injection Valve
Turn the injection valve into the injection channel. An arrow on the distal connector shows you the injection
channel (Fig. 5).
