give you even more comfort. This grip
is one of Batavus's own developments;
it gives the palm of the hand just the
right support. Because of this, tingling
fi ngers and numb hands are limited to
a minimum.
The grip is equipped with a bolt which
has to fall precisely into a groove in the
handlebars. If you wish to adjust the
Ergo-Grip, loosen the bolt a few turns
with a 3 mm hexagonal key, place the
grip in the correct position and then
tighten the bolt again. Check whether
your grip is tight enough!
Your Batavus dealer can also be of
service to you in this case.

Luggage, such as shopping, should be
on the luggage rack or in the saddle
bags wherever possible.
If you use a handlebar bag, make sure
that this bag (with contents) weighs as
little as possible. Too much weight on
the handlebars may be detrimental to
the steering behaviour of the bicycle.
THE HEADSET
The front fork is fi xed in the frame
by means of the headset (15) which
consists of two (ball) bearing rings at
the top and bottom of the head tube
of the frame. It is important that the
headset is properly adjusted. Damage
(e.g. 'pitting' in the bearing ring) al-
most always arises if there is play in the
two bearings. It is therefore advisable
to check, on a regular basis, whether
there is indeed play. You can do so by
trying to push the bicycle backwards
and forwards while braking with the
front brake. Excessive play can be felt
immediately. It is advisable to go along
to your Batavus dealer for regular
checks. It is more diffi cult to ascertain
play if your bicycle has roller brakes,
because the roller brake construction
suggests play. So it is preferable to
have this done by your Batavus dealer,
too, including if your bicycle does not
have a front brake.

A SMOOTH RIDE
A Batavus bicycle with hub gears
ensures smooth, easy gear shifting. It
is advisable to choose a lighter gear
rather than one which is slightly too
heavy to spare your back and knees.
Use the heaviest gear as much as
(15)
possible for descents or if you have a
tail wind. There is a rotary gear shift
switch on a lot of Batavus models (16).
It is ergonomically shaped and is light
to operate. You will have a smoother
gear shift and spare the mechanism if
you stop pedalling for a moment while
shifting gear. If, as time goes by, gears
jump spontaneously or you experience
any creaking, just cycle down to your
Batavus dealer and have your bicycle
checked out. He can easily correct these
defects.
