Some Batavus models are equipped
with a suspension front fork (21) which
cushions you from the irregularities in
the road.
Most of these suspension front forks
are of the telescopic type. The upper
tubes (the inner poles) slide into the
lower tubes, which are wider.
A front fork is equipped with a) a com-
pression spring with elastomer (plastic
cushioning) or b) a compression spring
system. Seals in the top of the lower
tubes ensure that no damp or dirt can
(20)
penetrate into the internal mechanism.
It is advisable to leave the maintenance
of the suspension front fork to your Ba-
tavus dealer. He can also help with any
adjustment which may be necessary.
Keeping it clean on the outside is, of
course, something you can do yourself.

• Water may not be allowed into the
lower tube when cleaning. The use of a
garden hose or high-pressure sprayer is
therefore inadvisable.
• Please see your Batavus dealer for
adjustment of your suspension front
and back forks.

hear a lot of squeaking and creaking.
After a time, water (particularly if it is
salty) will eventually fi nd its way in to
the chain. For maintenance and adjust-
ment of the chain tension, please see
your Batavus dealer.
THE PEDALS
The pedals may have a just-perceptible
degree of play. Check this regularly
and, at the same time, look at whether
the pedals are fi rmly fi xed to the
cranks. Take extra care when wearing
hard and/or leather soles, as your feet
may slip off the pedals while cycling.
Make sure that you wear shoes with
suffi cient grip.

THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF BRAKES

have various types of brakes, as fol-
lows: the rim brake (V-brake), the drum
