want to go to extra lengths to secure
your valuable bicycle, it is worthwhile
anchoring it to a pole or fence with an
extra cable lock. The cable does have to
go through the frame and one of the
two wheels and not just through the
front wheel. Batavus Safety Lock: When
the key is turned to the locked positi-
on, a pin slides into the crankshaft and
freezes the movement of the pedals.
The accompanying cable can be used to
attach the bicycle to a fence or other
fi xed point (41).
Insure your bicycle against theft.
Did you know that there are insurance
companies which require a special
safety lock?

CYCLING SAFELY ON PUBLIC ROADS
You probably usually use your Batavus
bicycle on public roads. It goes without
saying that you will observe the traffi c
rules, for your own safety and that of
other road users. Furthermore, you
must ensure that the bicycle is equip-
ped such that it meets the statutory
minimum requirements. This is, it is true,
the case when you purchase your Bata-
vus bicycle, but it may no longer be so
after a time because of wear on certain
components such as brakes or lighting.
Have these things checked regularly,
preferably by your Batavus dealer.
When cycling, keep your hands on the
grips and remain seated on the saddle
(except, of course, during mounting
and dismounting). Do not cycle onto
or off kerbs and try to avoid large ir-
regularities in the road. Severe jars and
extreme loads can damage important
components.
TRANSPORT BY CAR
Recently, the transport of bicycles
by car has concentrated increasingly
on carriers which are fairly simple to
mount on the towing hook of the car.
(41)
But there are possibilities even if you
do not have a towing hook. It is advisa-
ble to go along to your Batavus dealer
with the car fi rst to make enquiries.
He has the knowledge to help you fi nd
the most practical and, more impor-
tant, safest solution for your particular
bicycle(s).

• If you make a trip with a bicycle on
your carrier, make sure that any acces-
sories which can vibrate loose (pump,
bicycle computer, etc.) are removed
from it in advance.
• A stop on the way is a good oppor-
tunity for a short inspection to check
whether the bicycle is still fi rmly fi xed
on the carrier.
• A quick check of whether the vital
parts of the bicycle are working proper-
ly before you mount up also promotes
safety.
• Members of the ANWB (Dutch equi-
valent of the AA) can pick up a copy
of the members' guide: 'Lekker Fietsen
(Great cycling)' free of charge. It
discusses all the possibilities for bicycle
transport. It is a must!

• Always switch off the batteries of the
automatic backlight (setting 'off') be-
fore putting the bicycle onto the carrier
on the back of the car.
• Once you have arrived at your desti-
nation, put the batteries back onto the
automatic setting before going cycling.
