However, to be able to continue enjoy-
ing cycling, and cycling safely, profes-
sional maintenance is necessary, inclu-
ding an annual service. Your dealer not
only has the tools and the experience
to adjust and grease hidden rotating
components such as the headset and
hubs, but his expertise also enables
him to recognize small imperfections
in good time. For example, before
the winter sets in or before a touring
holiday. Maintenance and adjustment
of the bicycle depend on the use and
weight of the cyclist. Good main-
tenance is also extremely important as
regards the guarantee, because it can
lapse if your bicycle is not maintained
in accordance with the guidelines
stipulated in this booklet or is not
maintained by a competent professio-
nal. For professional maintenance it is
often necessary to consult your Batavus
dealer. If you are in any doubt, contact
him. Please read the provisions of the
guarantee carefully, too; these can be
found later in this booklet.
TOOLS
A simple set of tools is suffi cient for
small jobs. You can do most of them
with the aid of a set of open-end or
socket spanners, hexagonal keys, a
screwdriver, a pair of combination
pliers, a bottle of bicycle oil and, of
course, a puncture repair kit.
We recommend the use of original
components when replacing parts, or
having them replaced. This is so that
the bicycle will function optimally and
because, in some cases, your guarantee
may lapse otherwise. Ask your Batavus
dealer for advice.
CLEANING
First remove the dirt with a brush. A
spiral brush (often used for cleaning
central heating radiators) can be really
useful in reaching spots which are
diffi cult to get at (e.g. the insides of
mudguards).
Subsequently go to work with hot
water mixed with a mild liquid soap
(i.e. no strong chemical agents such as
bleach, ammonia or soda) and a soft
cotton cloth.
Because bearing-mounted turning
points are water repellent but not
waterproof, it is wise to avoid using a
garden hose or high-pressure sprayer.
We recommend that you grease the
aluminium, chrome and steel compo-
nents on your bicycle with acid-free
vaseline to prevent oxidation. This is
particularly important before the win-
ter when salt is put down on the roads.
THE CHECKLIST
After a fall it is very important that
your bicycle is carefully examined for
damage and defects even if no da-
mage is immediately visible in the fi rst
instance. Damaged components must
be replaced immediately. For safety
reasons have your bicycle thoroughly
checked, preferably by your Batavus
dealer.
I M P O R T A N T
If your front fork, handlebars or stee-
ring pin are bent or damaged after a
fall or accident, these components may
not, under any circumstances, be bent
back into their original shape. This may
alter the structure of the material such
that a crack could arise. If possible, the-
refore, consult your Batavus dealer and
have bent or damaged bicycle compo-
nents replaced.
Check the following regularly:
• Are the brakes working properly?
Are the brake blocks and bolts fi rmly
tightened? Are the cables intact?
Are the brake surfaces clean and free
from grease?
• Are the spokes correctly tensioned?
Have the spokes been checked and, if
necessary, tightened by your Batavus
dealer on a regular basis.
• Are the saddle and steering pin higher
than the maximum safety height?
• Have all the bolts, nuts and quick
release levers been fi rmly tightened
