ing cycling so it is advisable to replace
them as soon as possible. Your Batavus
expert knows what to do in both cases.

THE HEADSET

The front fork is fi xed in the frame by
means of the headset. It is important
that the headset is properly adjusted.
Check whether the central clamping
bolt is secured and that the handlebars
are fi rmly fi xed before every trip. It is
advisable to have your Batavus dealer
check whether the handlebars are cor-
rectly adjusted and the clamp free from
play on a regular basis.

A SMOOTH RIDE

A Batavus bicycle with hub gears en-
sures smooth, easy gear shifting.
There is a rotary gear shift switch on a
lot of Batavus models (6). It is ergo-
nomically shaped and light to operate.
You will have a smoother gear shift and
spare the mechanism if you stop pedal-
ling for a moment while shifting gear.
If, as time goes by, gears jump sponta-
neously or you experience any creak-
ing, just cycle down to your Batavus
dealer and have your bicycle checked
out. He can easily correct these defects.

• Hubs may never be oiled.
• Make sure that there is not too much
play in the hubs. This causes unneces-
sary wear. In the event of doubt please
consult your Batavus dealer.
• If you should want to take out the
back wheel, it is advisable to go to your
Batavus dealer, to avoid damaging
components!
• Contact your dealer for information
on the best way to adjust SPECTRO 3
and 7 hub gears.

GEAR OPTIONS

This system means that you have
various gear options at your disposal
so that you can anticipate road and
(6)
weather conditions and react ac-
cordingly. The (rotary) switch shifts
in 8 steps (8 sprocket wheels) at the
rear. There is one toothed wheel
(chainwheel) at the front. If properly
adjusted, this system shifts gears ex-
tremely well.

ADJUSTING THE REAR DERAILLEUR

If the rear derailleur does not respond
to your commands immediately, you
can usually adjust it easily. If the chain
comes off the innermost or outermost
sprocket wheel (rear), this can be
corrected by tightening the adjusting
screws on the rear derailleur (7) with
a small screwdriver. You can adjust
the derailleur so that the 'clicking' of
the gear switch corresponds precisely
with the related sprocket wheel. This
requires a certain amount of techni-
cal insight. Your Batavus dealer will be
happy to help you with this.
The rear derailleur is also equipped
with a cable adjusting screw (8). By
