thumb (15). In the case of a Batavus

GEAR OPTIONS
This gear system means that you have
a large number of gear options at your
disposal.
The gear switches usually shift in 3
steps (3 chainwheels) at the front and
in 7 to 9 steps (7 to 9 sprocket wheels)
at the rear.
Provided it is properly adjusted, this is
an excellent system. When cycling, the
8
(16)
chain should be as straight as possible
(or in other words, a straight chain line).
I M P O R T A N T
Avoid a diagonal chain line to prevent
premature wear. So for the outer chain-
wheel (front) do not use the innermost
sprocket wheel (which is closest to the
spokes) and vice versa (18).
ADJUSTING THE FRONT AND REAR
DERAILLEURS
If the derailleur does not respond to
your commands immediately, you can
usually adjust it easily. This requires a
certain amount of technical insight.
Your Batavus dealer will be happy to
help you with this.

• For more accurate gear shifting, and
to spare the mechanism, stop pedalling
(17)
for a moment while shifting gear.
The front and rear derailleurs must be
cleaned regularly. Do not forget the
derailleur wheels of the rear derailleur.
Cleaning prevents mud and dirt from
piling up. A small brush, old toothbrush
and small thin screwdriver are useful
aids for removing caked dirt. You can
oil the rotating parts and the derailleur
cables with water repellent (derailleur)
oil, for light, smooth gear shifting. You
can consult your Batavus dealer on how
to do this.

Some Batavus models are equipped
with a suspension front fork (19) which
cushions you from the irregularities
in the road. Most of these suspension
front forks are of the telescopic type.
