THE PEDALS
The pedals may have a just-perceptible
degree of play. Check this regularly
and, at the same time, look at whether
the pedals are fi rmly fi xed to the
cranks. Take extra care when wearing
hard and/or leather soles, as your feet
may slip off the pedals while cycling.
Make sure that you wear shoes with
suffi cient grip.

THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF BRAKES
Batavus uses various types of brakes on
the Comfortable & Recreational and
the Comfortable & Sporty bicycles, as
follows: rim brakes (cantilever brakes,
V-brakes, hydraulic brakes), disc brakes
and roller brakes.
They are of high quality and require
little maintenance. Braking depends
largely on familiarity with the brakes,
experience and "feel".
In wet weather, for example, your bra-
king distance is longer and when ma-
king long descents it is safer to brake in
short bursts to prevent overheating of
the brake blocks.

• Nuts and bolts must be fi rmly tigh-
tened.
• Cables may not be frayed or kinked.
• Brake surfaces must be clean and
free from grease.
• For safety reasons we advise you ne-
ver to brake only with the front brake
as the front wheel can easily block
resulting in a fall.
• If, after a time, you notice that the
brake power of the bicycle is decrea-
sing, the brake is probably worn or not
properly adjusted. Do not simply carry
on cycling with the brakes in this condi-
tion. It is time for action! We provide a
few instructions here for the experien-
ced, enthusiastic do-it-yourselfer, but
this is a routine job for your Batavus
dealer.
RIM BRAKES (V-BRAKES / HYDRAULIC
BRAKES)
A. The V-brake (21) also uses cantilever
arms but they are longer and, as a re-
sult, give more brake power. The brake
cable of the V-brake runs via a special
cable guide or tube.
B. The hydraulic rim brake is a brake
system which provides an extremely ef-
fi cient transmission of the brake power
in combination with very good control.
When the brake is squeezed a piston in
the brake grip increases the pressure in
the brake line. The pressure built up in
the brake line ensures that the piston,
with the brake block, is moved to the
rim.
See your Batavus dealer for adjustment
of these brakes.

• Never disassemble or cut through the
lines (at any place at all) of hydraulic
rim brakes yourself since the fl uid (usu-
ally oil) is under high pressure.

REPLACING THE BRAKE BLOCKS
1. The brake blocks must be replaced
if the slanting grooves are worn away
(22). Rims have their own unique cha-
racter and the blocks mounted form a
safe unit with them. Because there are
many different types of brake blocks,
we advise that you always consult your
